First Bunch Length Studies in the Slc South Final Focus

We report the rst studies of bunch length in collision in an operating linear collider, making use of a new rf bunch length monitor installed in the South Final Focus of the Stanford Linear Collider (SLC) prior to the 1997/98 luminosity run. The theoretical and measured monitor responses to linac injection phase and bunch compressor voltage are described. Correlations with beamstrahlung and lum...

First observation of beamstrahlung.

Collisions of electron and positron bunches at the interaction point of the SLC (the linear collider at SLAC) h ave led to the first detected emission of beam-strahlung. This radiation, caused by the collective electromagnetic fields of one beam deflecting particles of the other, is a potential tool for optimizing collisions in linear colliders. With the advent of the linear collider1 as a tool...

Limitations of Interaction-point Spot-size Tuning at the Slc

At the Stanford Linear Collider (SLC), the interactionpoint spot size is minimized by repeatedly correcting, for both beams, various low-order optical aberrations, such as dispersion, waist position or coupling. These corrections are performed about every 8 hours, by minimizing the IP spot size while exciting different orthogonal combinations of final-focus magnets. The spot size itself is dete...

A Monitor for Gamma Radiation at Zero Degrees from the Slc Collision

Bremsstrahlung gamma rays are emitted in a narrow forward cone while ... -. the electron and positron beams are being measured with carbon fibers at the SLC (the linear collider at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center). Beam-beam deflections which occur at the collision point also emit softer gamma rays, called beamstrahlung. A device to detect these gammas is described. It has a converter to...

Beam-loss Monitors Tn the Slc Final Focus'

Beam-loss monitors in the SLC Final Focus System &e used for protection of accelerator and detector components, optimizing adjustment of beam halo collimators, and as diagnostics of beam size and halo. Construction of a variety of monitors based on discrete ion chambers, proportional tubes, continuous 'ion chambers, and signals from the Mark II detector is reported. The interfaces to the SLC co...
